    Hey all,

I am wondering if one would be able to recomend a battery backup for a reef tank. After getting hit hard in hurricane sandy while living in Hoboken, NJ I am afraid of the approaching hurricane season. I live in an apartment building so getting a gas generator is not an option for me. We lost power for 8 days but my job had a generator within 3 days. So in the event of a repeat I would be able to begin recharging battery's in that timeframe. Atleast imaginably. What would be the most Important things to run in the event of a long term power outage? How many battery's would I need? I have a 60 gal tank with 2 mp 10s, a radion, mag 9.5 return and a ssa cs1 skimmer. These would be the basic parts of the system.

honestly since you have two mp10s I'm going to say your best bet is probably to buy the Vortech Battery Backup for water movement.

OR, look for a UPSproduce pure sine wave power.
I beLIEve you can get away with one that does not produce pure sine wave if you don't plan on plugging any pumps into it. I'm quite sure I've read some threads on here saying it's NOT a good idea to run the MP pumps on a NON sign wave ups.

If you do some searching on here, there are plenty of threads on this. You'll have to decide on something that is right for YOUR system and wallet.

Many folks choose not to run the return pump too (that mag 9.5 will need 93 watts which is pretty significant! to ask from a battery).
Worry about running your heater and MP 10s. Running anything else on top of that is just a bonus.

The most inexpensive option may be to buy the vortech battery and then a "cheap" smaller non sign wave ups that only runs your heater.

Otherwise, if you have money to burn, the skys the limit!
