If you are going to use vortechs they have a battery backup you can get.

i did see the vortex but what about heater and lights and other pumps there must be a system to plug into. I know computers have battery backup was wondering if something like that might work for a tank

i am going to do some research on this maybe I can come up with something. honestly a generator is over kill and will collect dust in my shed. what if i am not home to turn the gen on. most of the time the power would not be out for too long. the vortex with wave control and battery back up are expensive. So if i am going to spend the money for the back up was wondering about alternatives.

home depot sell's power inverters which can connect to either a car battery, motorcycle battery, or even a marine battery.

i was looking into buying a marine battery meant for trolling motors because they do not require an engine to recharge. power inverters at home depot at like $70?

Yeah generator is your best bet if you want lights and all. If you have a power outage though I would just focus on water circulation and heat. There are methods of using hot water bottles to keep a tank warm. Most heaters are big energy suckers. 50-300w. I'd recommend wrapping aquarium in towels and blankets for insulation as soon as you could. But my question. If your facing power outage for more than 48 hours. Solar panel hooked up to a generator to charge it during the day. Something like that would be fairly simple to throw together.

most battery backups and Universal Power Supplys are only a temporary fix for computers so when the power goes out, you have time to save everything and shut down without losing important work. Generally I feel like they last in the range of 8 hours where as the power inverter + battery can last a few days, and can also be taken across town to a friends house for a quick recharge, then replaced to the tank!
