It's been about a year since Elite Reef opened, and with this period under our belts it's time to reflect on some of our long term experiences with some of our equipment. There's no shortage to the talk about how awesome the Bean-Animal Overflows are, but it's hard to find any information on how they run long term. We have been running Bean-Animals on all of our coral flats as well as a customer display tank since day one, and after a year I feel that I can draw some conclusions on the system. The Bean-Animal is a system that relies on a couple of ball valves being perfectly adjusted, and because of this my suspicions were that they would have to be constantly adjusted, but this has proven to be exactly the opposite. Over the last year the adjustments on all of our systems have stayed true, and they are still running dead silent! Another thing to note is that the Bean-Animal has a double back up system, and while we've been running it the systems are yet to even need the first back-up! The have run clog free and I can't even imagine what kind of disaster would warrant the use of the second of the back-ups. In short, the Bean-Animal is the best overflow I've ever had a the pleasure of working with, and I can't wait to see how they serve us in the coming years.

Congrats and thanks for the update on the efficacy of the overflow system.

There is a degree of self regulation and it should not need much adjusting. Curious though that you said it needs a couple of ball valves to be adjusted. There is only one adjustment valve and it should be a gate valve. Ball valves are not well suited for this application.

I guess people do not add long term coments but these overflows have been in use for years. I would not really have a problem doing a Herbie or Bean hybrid... what ever you want to call it. Just using two pipes of equal size. One main and one open. I haven't got a clue what could possibly happen to ever need the third overflow. Other than bragging rights to be able to say that it is 99.99% fail safe.
