Couple quick questions about the Bean Animal Overflow design:

1: Do the bulkheads need to be SxS, or can the be TxT?

2: Why does the plumbing go from 1" to 1.5"? It seems like a waste of a piece of PVC and the parts would cost more. Also, if the bulkhead is 1", all the water that's going through the entire system would be limited to 1".

3: Is the adaptor before the cap necessary? Couldn't I just tie the cap straight into the PVC pipe?

4: Is there a reason to go with a true-union ball valve over a regular ball valve?

Not trying to correct the design, just wondering if I can skip a few steps and still get the same result.

    All good questions.

1.depending how u do your overflow you can use txt if you have room to thread elbows onto them and room behind the tank to do the same.
2.plumbing size is variable depending on tank size(really meaning flow rate).I belive he had 1" bulk heads so that is what he used.but in general you will still get more flow doing it that way then if you use 1" pvc.just not as much as 1.5"
3.if you can clarify I can answer this aswell.
    4. True union ball valves save alot of space compared to 2 unions and a ball valve.they also alow you to clean the ball valve easily.after doing many set ups I've learned the more unions the better.just makes life easier

The one that says "1.5" NPT x 1.5" slip PVC adaptor". Do I need it?:

If you look closely, you will see that it is threaded so you can adjust the cap.

What about pressure? It affects flow. A full siphon vs. open drain (w air) will flow more water. It ain't all in the size of the pipe.

So TxT takes up more space than SxS? I only want about 4" of space behind the tank.

Can I buy the ball valve from Home Depot or Lowe's?

Which bulkhead saves more space with plumbing; sxs, txt, sxt, or txs?
