I am setting up a fresh water tank for my son. I grabbed some ceramic rings from my sump and put them into the filter of the new fresh water tank, will bacteria on ceramic rings work in fresh water? BTW does protein skimmer works in freshwater tank?

The bacteria already in the filter rings will most likely die in fresh water but they do work well for fresh. Protein skimmers do work with fresh water but are mostly viewed as overkill. Nitrates dont matter as much with freshwater as with a reef.

Why most of them will die? if they work in freshwater. I have six 2-3 inch wild trouts in the tank, they were caught by my son.

The point for skimmer is good, I am so used to it, always think about it when I ever setup a tank.

    Thanks!!

No offense Mike, but I dis-agree on the skimmer. Skimmers will not foam in fresh water like they do in saltwater. I do agree that the bacteria will not cross over. Different strain of bacteria.

you can try to put a standard protien skimmer on a freshwater tank all day long and it's not going to foam. Just doesn't have the chemical make up to produce a foam head with a standard skimmer. I say a standard skimmer because they do make skimmers for freshwater applications but not for what we use them for. If I'm not mistaken, they use them in sewage plants and things like that. The technology is just a little too far for freshwater use right now.

Yup, the skimmers we all have are for salt only. They will not work on a freshwater.
