well i currently have a pred tank...mostly triggers and a lion.....i want to start putting corals but i know none of my fish are reef safe. Is thier any "cheap" coral i could buy to break me in....i know iam going to have to start takeing readings for cal, mag, iod etc....not worried about that...just dont want to spend alot of $$ on a expensive coral and have it destroyed in 2 days.....The reason for this is i might want to start another 55 gallon with just reef safe fish/corals but dont wanna jump ahead before i actually experiment with it.

    thanx

I wouldnt put any corals in a "trigger" infested tank. They are known to nip. I would wait until you get that 55 going and make that your reef tank.

If your lighting is decent, toss in some xenia, green star polyps and maybe a few mushrooms to see how they do. Worst case scenario you would be out $20-30 and know for sure your fish and corals dont mix.

How is the lion doing in with all those notorious fin nippers?

xenias, zoas or some other "noxiously slimed" coral would be ur best shot.

I have a tank with triggers, a lionfish and a lunare wrasse. They didn't bother the mushrooms zoas and xenia frags that I added about a week ago. They were actually more interested on the plug or piece of rock that the frags were on. Also, the lionfish won't nip at corals, and my trigger(picasso) wasn't that interested, but my lunare wrasse would move some around.

I would def put i the cheapest coral I could find. stuff you wont freak out when Mr trigger takes bites, its cool seing them eat star polyps.
