The difference between the magnesium supplements is the additional ions that they add to the tank, one will add sulfates and one will add chlorides. They recommend using a combination of the two magnesium supplements depending on how you are supplementing calcium and alkalinity.

If you're dosing 2 part you will already be adding a lot of chloride from the calcium supplement (calcium chloride) so you will want to use more of the magnesium sulfate in your magnesium mixture. 5 cups of mg chloride and 3 cups of mg sulfate to 1 gallon of RO/DI water.

If you're not dosing 2 part but are using kalkwasser or a calcium reactor for supplementing calcium and alkalinity then you can use mostly magnesium chloride and just a small bit of the sulfate.

It's just to try and help prevent too much of a single excess ion from building up in the system.

I like kalkwasser, or pickling lime.
