    Hey 3reefers,
Im setting up a 75gallon and am going to put a canister filter on it. What would be the best filter to get for it? What would be the best canister filter between Eheim, FLuval, Rena, Marineland, or any other suggestions?

    please help me with this
It for a 75g lightly loaded reef tank

You will prob get a load of people saying telling you not to get one and use a sump instead, however in some cases a canister is the only option!
I have used eheim, fluval and tetratec, my favourite so far was the fluval 5 series.

The best filter you could get would be a sump and refugium. Honestly, canister filters are a little outdated, they are kind of a carry over from freshwater. They do serve their purpose though, just make sure to keep it clean. As to your question, I like Eheim or Fluval. Both pretty good quality. Make sure you get one at least rated for your tank size, if not more.

While a lot of Marineland products are of excellent quality, their canister filters leave a lot to be desired.

Id love to get a sump and/or refugium. I have a 38 gallon long i would wanna make into a sump. But seriously, is it bad to have a canister filter, suggesting the Fluval 405 for a 75G which i will clean every other week? The sump just seems a bit confusing for me to build. I would definately not buy one, except the return pump. Is it possible to make a sump and have it not work, lol feelin' kinda silly but whatever. Like for example, what happens if my return pump is pumping more water out than the overflow is bringing in? I dont even have an overflow on my aquarium, so how would i go about pumping the water into the sump without using a simple syphon?

    PLEASE HELP ASAP

That's why you match the GPH of the return pump to the capacity of the overflow. Then you don't have this issue.

alright fine. So im convinced to make and overflow out of PVC piping, and use my 38 G for a sump. Thanks guys. Its also cheaper than buying a canister filter. Wheres the best place to buy a return pump in Canada. Big als sells them but they're expensive and anyother LFS is even more expensive. Im going to try rona or home depot (hardware stores) and see if i can find one there for cheaper

+1. Skimmers probably the most important filter you can have outside of live rock. I have an Eheim canister that my LFS talked me into when I was a newbie (Not that I'm not now only 6 months in, but you know...). I took out all of the "Biological Filtration" media because it turns into a nitrate factory instead of helping with the problem. I just use mine for water flow, a filter pad for mechanical filtration, and carbon from time to time. I would go with the sump also. Also, to help with the water coming in and out of the sump at the same rate, you could get an adjustable GPH pump. A little more expensive, but there out there.
