I have a fluval 305 canister filter. It now contains fluval carbon and the fluval rings. I am wondering what are the best medias to put into the canister and how often i should change them?

IM thinking about phosphate remover and nitrate remover along with the carbon?

    I have 6 trays

I have the same filter. I use Chemi-Pure Elite. It takes care of the all the things regular carbon does plus it eliminates silicates and phosphates. Plus it last up to 6 months. I kept the top tray loaded with fluval rings. I also use de-nitrate by seachem to keep nitrates undetectable.

You can probably get away with not having the De-Nitrate. I went months without and my nitrates hovered around 10-20ppm, which I personally think is acceptable. But the Chemi-Pure Elite will save you a little on buying a phosphate removing product.
