Hey all, so been looking into upgrading my 46 gallon bowfront to metal halide from my 2x96w coralife pc fixture. a couple restrictions are that i built a =Jwin= canopy so the light needs to be less than 8" wide and obviously cannot be suspended from ceiling. also i have the center brace in the middle of the tank so a single mh will not work very well.

with that said, the only thing i can think of using would be making my own fixture and using a couple of the 175W Hamilton Technology Universal MH's... (Hamilton Technology Universal Metal Halide Retrofit Kit - 2 x 175W 10000K)

you guys think this would work? and how hot would these things get? what other options do i have?

    thanks in advance ;D

You could use two 150w clip on MH lights.

I have a 36 bowfront with a jwin canopy and a clamp on Hamilton 150..yes if you touch the light it's HOT but the back of the canopy is open..i have noticed no temperature increase as compared to my PC's. you could even put one or two fans in the top of the canopy if two of the lights did start to heat things up.

I have 2 150w clampons on my 55 gallon with a hood. They get super hot but I added a fan to the top. and my temp actually goes down a degree. and It gives you that cool shimmer affect.

The downside it also makes evaporation a lot more of a problem.

I would go with 2x150 DE MH over a 2x 175 SE MH for space reasons.

I have 2 150w coralife clip ons on my 46 bow. I also have a fan in the stand blowing down on my refugium. Temp never goes over 80 degrees, it actually drops 1 degree after the fan turns on. the fan inside the stand is the only fan on my system besides the small fans built into the light fixtures, but i am not sure that they do much.

wow thanks for all the input guys... i never even knew those coralife clamp-ons existed! i could easily mount a couple fans underneath the canopy to cool everything down... damn they're pricey though! $350 CDN a piece! worth it though i guess. i'll wait a few paycheques :p

another thing is i currently have a 50/50 actinic bulbs in the the pc fixture i have now... would i need to run an couple small actinics to get the blue tint or not necessary with the coralife pendants? and the actinics lighting is more than just the color spectrum, it also helps for the reef too right?
