Also if it really is diatoms they will probably cycle themselves out if your nutrient export is good enough and your water quality is good. I would just wait it out personally if this just started.

yeah, they love to jump. i had an open tank and moo shu (the first one) was fine for about 5 months and then he took a dive. now i've got egg crate over the tank and Caboose (the new one) is locked in tight.

"carpet surfing..." lmao! never heard that before. Egg crate, never even thought of putting that across the top. Doesn't interfere with lighting? hmm. Anyhoo, what is it they're getting out of the sand? LFS was who'd told me they generally didnt survive from not getting enough to eat.

Dragon Goby all the way. Ours has hands down been the hardest working fish in our tank and he has eradicated any signs of hair algae on our sand.

We lost a tiny Diamond Goby about an inch long(smallest one I ever saw) through eggcrate. Next one I got was the average size about 4 inches, he has jumped twice while my wife was working on one side of the tank, fortunately the eggcrate was still on the other side, hit it and went right back in the tank. Wish we would have taken pictures of his progress.3 days tops and my sand was clean(in a 55) We put mysis and stuff in the sand for him every so often.

EDIT- We had a bit of the sandstorm effect for two days, also when they clean out their burrow, they go head first in and wiggle them selves stupid, In effect causing the sandstorm for us.

instead of egg crate (which can sometimes diffuse lighting) you can make a screen covering using mesh netting.

My diamond goby eats a lot of the stuff that is in the sand. He also eats frozen foods when I feed my other fish.

But I definitely agree with all the others....they are definitely jumpers. I am on my second one. At first the "sandstorm" was a bit distracting, but that has since calmed down.

I put a layer over the eggcrate with that bridal veil fabric. we lost a diamond goby with just having eggcrate. our new one hasn't escaped yet, only jumped, hit the top, and fell back in lol

my diamond goby only ever gets to 8 inches from the bottom and thats only at feeding time cause he eats everything i put in the tank except for the nori(flakes, pellets, brine, mysis shrimp). other than that, hes always gliding the bottom. does your guys's close up his den at night. mine does everynight when he goes to bed he closes the entrance and then opens it in the morning and leaves it open til next night.
