no "average" snails are going to eat beneficial stuff. snails won't harm the bacteria on rock. if you mean the algae on the rock...most of it is not beneficial anyway, and alot will die off during the curing process. sponges also.
you should not add snails to a tank with uncured rock anyway. they will most likely die. add snails after the rock is cured.

as stated, the mexican turbos are big eaters, but nothing beats a mag float or run-of-the-mill scraper. snails are poor glass cleaners in general.

yeah if you get enough they'll do a decent job for ya, but u'll still have to do some physical labor. my mexicans are awesome cleaners but only when lights are off, but beware they're lil' bulldozers anything unstable they will knock it down, like a bull in a china shop.

    Here is what you want..

Mexican Turbo Snails..."Gram for Gram, these clean more algae than any other snail. "

Zebra Striped Turbo Snails are cleaning machines...but be warned they can get pretty big. Don't need more then a couple of these to keep aquarium glass free from any algae....I have one that is getting to be about 4" across.

Trochus Snails --- a few of these plus above will take care of just about all your algae removing needs.... "They move very slowly but leave nothing behind, eating filamentous algae, slime algae, green algae, diatoms, and cyanbacteria."

    Put them to work!!!

trochus for me, if they fall on their backs they can flip back over. Less snail fatalities, plus they are smart enuf not to crawl out of the tank
