on the 55 gallon i will be using there is some build up, and the tank needs to be cleaned. My mom told me to use a white vinegar solution, and use newspaper to wipe it with :p

Whats the best way, or is this the best way?

White vinegar works very well. But don't use newspaper as it has ink in it which could be toxic to livestock. You must wash it very well to make sure there is no residue left and why take the chance; just use paper towels.

I would hit it with the white vinigar and then scrape it with a straight razorblade just like you do with coraline algae. wipe it out with vinigar again then rinse it out well with clean water.

I got a long algae scraper for my tank 8$ at petco that I can get under the sand line with, then I use scrubbers like the back of a kitchen sponge to get all the algae off the glass. It works very well. On the outside I have a micro fiber mitt that is awesome, needs no cleaning solution if you do it weekly.
