OK so I just designed my new stand for my new 90gal, it is made out of 1 1/2" steel square tubing. It will be powder coated this week. We built it yesterday at work and everything was awesome. Until... I went to hang my light in the stand just checking fit and form, and I guess I did not measure twice. The light won't fit!

This brings me to my dilema, how do I fix this? The stand has been cut welded and is as strong as a tank, so we are not changing it. The light has two MH bulbs and two Actinic Fluorescent bulbs housed in a half hexagon black housing with Starfire glass that is 1" to long too fit in the stand. so no way to make it shorter.

I could sell it and buy something different, or I could come up with a way to use the lights with out the housing. So my question is how do I do use the lights I have with out the housing?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Couldn't you just basically take it apart, ensure all wiring is protected, and basically hook it up to the stand you made?

Or, is there just a hole at canopy of the stand? You could just sacrifice an extra inch's worth of light and hang it pendant-style as close to the canopy as possible. That might even provide some extra ventilation.

I might just be entirely stupid, though.

I don't understand. you mean it doesn't fit a canopy? or did you build some stand that has a canopy attached and the tank goes in the middle.

That is exactly what I did, I will try and attach the Google Sketchup pics and maybe that will show my problem.

So the distance between the uprights is 48 1/2" and the light is 49 1/2" I was thinking I could find a couple of pendant style housings for the MH's but I would imagine they would come with all of the light hardware which I do not need.

Here is a pic of the light.

I personally would only clad the bottom with wood. That seems the easiest solution to me.

Well what you can not see in this Sketchup is the fact that the two side uprights are further apart than it looks here. and the light will not fit in between them and there is not enough room to push it al the way to the front.
