I have had a problem with hair algae for over a year now. I have a 300 gal. reef tank, It has 5 250HQI's Bulbs are fairly new. about a 3700 gph pump, good protein skimmer (octopus), 2 tunseys internal pumps (plenty of current) RO DI everything's new (replace filters often) 3 in. sand bed, algae refusion filter. My water parameters: I sent water to be tested at aquariumwatertesting.com and results were everything was good except protein was a little low (dont remember specifics, but can look if needed). I still have hair algae, not much but if I put my lights on for 6 hours or more it grows back. I've tried tons of things and nothing apparently seems to be working. Tank is 6 years old. Never had a problem till a year ago. Corals are actually growing and they feed ever night. Just can't seem to get the hair algae out. Thanks in advance for your responses ;)

First of all, I would get your own test kits.

If you can post the exact measurements of:
    Nitrates:
    Nitrites:
    Phostphates:
That will help also. Have you changed bulbs recently? For me, my hair algae went away after I stopped feeding (no fish or inverts in tank).

Thanks for your response. Nitrates, Nitrites were at 0, Phosphates were at .01, I do have my own salifert test and they came out perfect, I sent it out to get tested to make sure. I have 3 fish, some inverts, I feed my fish very little bit. As for the lights, I change my bulbs every year for the last 6 years. They are less than 4 months old.

Are they liquid or stick testing? I would change every 6-8 months IMO, did you purchase any rock or corals recently?

Had to have switched something that started it all. Change fish food? Try something new? .01 for Phosphates is really low, but its probably higher than that, because your hair algea is actually keeping low by feeding off of it. Try a phosphate remover. If you don't read 0 in a 24 hour period change the media. This should set you up.

No Carbon for that last 3 to 4 months. I have Rowa in there though for the phosphates.
