Oh nice, congrats Billie! Amazing how loud it could be and how small things can quiet it down.

I would use the frozen food. It is still something organic that would have to be broken down anyways. I would just rinse it before putting it in your tank because frozen foods tend to be high in phosphates is all. I wouldn't really add more then two, but that is really your decision.

You should be fine. :) I wouldn't run any lights to help control any algae that might pop up.

Billie, Nice job, read almost all of this post. I'm quoting Kevins post b/c I strongly encourage you NOT to restrict the return with a ball valve.

Yes it can make things quieter, it will almost guarantee you a wet floor on day. The moment the outflow is greater than the return, yep, you guessed it, WET FLOOR.

I'm a DIY patriot- check out my jvid in my sig.

Oh, and PS, you may notice a ball valve on my return, which ALWAYS stays wide open. And no, I dom't reallly need it there. I had thought it might be useful wnen working on my tank, but I NEVER use it.

Also, someone mentioned a durso, or reverse durso, and you can see mine near the end of the vid. I often have a filter bag/sock on theend in my sump, just not when I took this vid.
With my 800 gph thru my sump, thereverse durse really quiets things down alot. there is a cap with a 1/4in hole in the top of it. This Really helps on the noise. My tank is very quiet these days.
And PS, my siphon break in my return is about 1/4 in. under the water line, so no noise from it. Your return nozzle looked so high up, I don't think you need the siphon break on yours. Obviously, try a power off on the return and make sure your sump will handle the back flow amount. As you may have seen on my vid., my 50g sump had plenty of room to handle any power outs without getting a wet floor.

I appreciate the concern, but I'm not restricting water flow, I'm preventing air from going inside the pipe, the ball valve is only shut just a little bit.

HOw does it prevent air from going inside? By decreasing the flow thru the tube, so less is drawn down with the flow? I'm sure you may have seen mods to your overflow pipes like the famous 'bean style' overflow? There are other styles also that claim they make it silent.

As long as you have reserve overflow capacity, you should have no problem.

Just takes all the air out of the pipe, like magic. I wanted to do a coast to coast overflow but I thought I might be biting off mpre than I can chew. That and this tank already come with the corner overflow.

Yes, the c t c would be nice. I was referring to the plumbing, with failsafes, etc., that can be virtually silent. This can be done on your Reef ready DT.

    Keep up the good work!
