dry rock. im not really 100% certain how to cycle a tank. im going to put my 80 lbs of sand and 50 lbs of rock in there, with out lights or a skimmer and run the ststem with the pumps and powerheads for a while and just see what happends. I dont want to use the snake oil potions that cycle it in seven day or anything like that. I want to do it old school where you leave it alone for a long time, let it do its 3 aglea blooms and when the last one clears up, do a 50% waterchange, and then add my clean up crew, my skimmer and then the lights.

will the cycle start without the use of fish or a dead shrimp or anything? with just the dry rock and sand?

    Another question:

Are you putting egg crate on the bottom of the tank, underneath the rock and sand? I have heard of people using this technique, but I have never tried it myself.
