regular basis could be a few as every 2-3 days or as long as once a week or so.it all depends on the condition/bio-load of your tank.. I too have a 55 gal.I change my pre-filter 1xweek and a poly filter just above BB`s every 2-3 days.you will have to just see how fast it gets dirty..I use a 50 or 100 micron poly filter pad(it really stops alot of debri) I bought in bulk for 10 bucks or so and cut them to fit.then as they get dirty just wash them with bleachand water(NO SOAP) let dry and reuse..

I used bio-balls as a pre-filter for years and didnt have any nitrate problems. I dont know that they did anything GOOD for me, but they didnt seem to hurt much. Sounds like LR in there is a better solution anyway.

    Good luck!

IMHO I would use the dirty water left over from a water change(the water you would dump down the drain)..just take a 3rd or so and shake them around in the water.this should work for ya ,over a few water changes all your BB`s will be cleaned
