How long should it take on average before I could see the effects of the bio pellets Im running in this upflow reactor? Namely a reduction in nitrates. Its been
    13 days so far.

    Thanks

Now, that is a hard question.
Direct answer is when bacteria takes residence AND numbers (of bacteria) increase to the point of overstocking the pellets. Then bacteria is falling off the pellets and dies being skimmed or eaten and of course some just dies in the water column; not before this has happened you will slowly start to se a difference if there IS A DIFFERENCE to accomplish.
These bacteria not being eaten at once not skimmed and lives for some time will continue to eat what nourishment it can get, and this is of course taken from the water column, making up fine fat clusters of bacteria that Will continue to feed, some Will be skimmed out and some will get eaten.
Pellets by themselves is sustainable for the bacteria and is only used to replenish the bacteria that we wish to have in the water.

I think I would like to run the pellets with or without the skimmer, just to add bacteria plankton to the water, rather that than free flowing phosphor and nitrate I think. Just adding to the live food.
