Bio Ring question!

    I am not sure what the purpose of bio rings would be. I have a HOB skimmer and a cascade canister to help. Most people tell me not to use the canister because its an annoyance to clean. I had it and figured it's better then leaving it in my closet. I did not need a powerhead because the canister does a good job. I bought bio rings and do not remember why or what for. Should I add these to my canister? any advice? this is what they look like.

    what those are for is for nutrifining bacteria to grow on it is up to u i think if u need to use them
