Hello, im pretty new to this hobby. Iv been taking things slow and i baught a 75gallon starter kit about 4 weeks ago, I have been cycling for about 3 in the half weeks now and everything doing good. This kit came with some alright stuff. It came with a Emperore 400 filter(sp?), It seems to do alright and keep water pretty clean, But anyways sorry, I was wondering should I think about saving money and getting a better filter or no,? oh and just doing Fish only.

I used an Emperor filter for years. There are a few tricks to do to them.

    1. Take off the wheels, they are nitrate factories, contrary to what the box tells you. NO good.
2 The empty cartridges can be used by putting carbon in them and wrapping them in quilt batting and putting a rubber band around it, to hold the batting. Yes quilt batting, you can get it from any sewing store or walmart. It comes in a big roll and lasts a long time.. doing it that way will save you a ton of money in the long run over compared to the price of their pre-made filters.
    3. Every 3-4 months, take the whole emperor apart and clean it, they get really nasty inside and doesn't help the nitrates.

other than setting up a sump/fuge, that is a descent filter for fish only. You're going to want to buy a good protein skimmer. a good one for a 75 gal will cost anywhere from 179.00 all the way up to 500.00 The 179. one is fine for it Don't buy Jebo, ViaAqua or SeaClone. They are junk....and very cheap, but they don't work without modifications and then they don't work well.

If you need any links let me know.(for the carbon and batting) You'll want to change those filters 1x per week, or, when you do your water change.
