I have been running a bio wheel on my tank for about 8 years, and it hasn't let me down yet! Proper tank and filter maintenance, along with an hob skimmer (sea clone, just as old) will make for a happy system. Granted I would like to eventually upgrade to a system that has a sump. It's more for aesthetics and the extra room and surface skimming that having an overflow provides. I think they can be perfectly capable filtration systems, but agree that they create the worst salt creep ever. The front of mine is solidly encrusted, it seems to coat itself pretty regularly! The biggest thing I found that helped ensuring the bio wheels effectiveness was making suet that the little clips where the wheel sits stay clean, if the wheel isn't spinning then you don't get the benefit of all the surface area :)
