    there is lots of controversy over bioballs, i personally run bioballs in my 8 gal, but also have chaeto and some LR. If you are on top of your filtration, (washing the filter sponge, bioballs, and whatever else you use) then Bioballs are heaven sent, but if you leave them in there and never wash them, it gets bad.
