So, I picked up this sweet system for next to nothing and with it came a 2x150 MH light with 4 T5's, and 10 extra MH bulbs. And I thought I'd sell it to make back my money for the new system, maybe even make money. And I'd just use my Cree 64 led system. So Biocube tells me I should just add some of my leds to this system, drop the T5's and use the led's for my sunrise and sunset and the MH's for my high noon lights!

I'm thinking of dismantling the led's and using about 48 of them on 2 long heatsinks in the front and rear.

    Damn you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

    Thoughts?

He'll yeah sounds awesome. Nice to see a good hack/mod go down. Actually, planning an led upgrade in an old 2x250 MH unit. Adding about 12 Cree LEDs and some moon lights. Should be sweet.

Ive really been bouncing the idea for halides supplemented with LEDs. My LFS has this on their tank and its nice. I would love to get some lumen reflectors, and a mix of blue, royal blue, and uv on dimmable drivers running on the perimeter of the halide.

But another part of me wants just LEDs for less heat and less energy. but i KNOW MH would grow the coral and LEDS make it POP! lol

You'll have to deal with a LOT more heat and power consumption.

I recognize that fixture; I had a 3 bulb version of that guy before I went to LEDs. The ballasts on it scared me; fire waiting to happen. The heat load I had in the room alone was insane, and it was easy to see my electricity usage plummet after I got rid of it. I really should dig out a copy of the bill and take a picture of the usage graph.

I'd flip it for profit and forget it. :)

;D I would have edited it away had you asked. Now you quoted it. :p

Here it is, if it's a mystery as to what it is: 48" ULTRA REEF 2 X 250W HQI + 4 x 65 POWER COMPACT

And those are PCs, not T5s, btw.

Ditto Evolved,I thought the main ideas behind led's (other than thier output) was to cut down heat, dim up and down giving more user control, save energy along with ridiculous bulb life.

Also, and I don't know the answer, but wouldn't that subject your corals to harsh lighting acclimation changes everyday?IDK,just wondering?

I hadn't even really looked at them yet because I was dead set on selling them till today. Maybe I'll power them up and see what my power meter reads they run.

Hmmm. Evolved is right. I didnt know what unit it was in particular. lol The halide/ LED unit is a great idea, just not with that unit.
