Ok so I want to have an INTENSE refugium in my biocube 29 to replace a protein skimmer and keep my nitrates at zero. The only in habitants in the tank will be two clowns and a goby so it shouldn't be hard to keep trates at zero. I have a few questions though...

    1. Can I grow a mixture of chaeto and mangroves in one place?

    2. Can I grow mangroves without sand or substrate?

    Here's what I have to work with...[IMG]

About 4" deep of water with LR at the bottom.

    Can it be done?

The mangroves are going to need to take root. Miracle Mud works great with them. How would you light the chaeto?

Probably a small clip on light from petsmart. I've heard of people taking a block of styrofoam and sticking the mangrove stalk through it. The styrofoam keeps the mangrove in place.

I would totally add a substrate but the fuge is in a part of the sump where the baffle opening is at the bottom so If I were to put sand in there it would slip under and go through my return pump.

Anyways I did a quick google search and turns out I can just stick the mangrove stock in the rocks and it will tank hold. So I'll probably end up doing a three mangroves with a ball of chaeto. :)
