Black algae

    Dunno what this stuff is its black or a real deep purple. Has bubbles of gas in it and smells rotten. Never seen it before just a small bit in my sump. Pulled it of course but has any1 had sumthin like I'm describing?

    Trust me. A jedi am I. :)

    Sounds like cyano bacteria. Can't tell for sure w/o pics.

    I would agree on cyano. Sometimes it's so dark green or dark red it looks black.

    I agree on the cyano. Need more flow or less nutrients or a combo of that.

    It's very common in new tanks. I'm assuming new tank by the join date.
