I have a black light, which is not actinic. It is just like a glow-in-the-dark black light that I purchased from a party store. I turned it on the other night when the lights were off and my corals fluoresced greatly. I am wondering if the black lights will do damage to the corals, fish and/or inverts?

Don't use a blacklight on your tank.

black lights put out pure uv's in the form of radiation. Though it would be small with that bulb, it will still damage or potentially kill the inhabitants, in time.

Ya, my aunt dated this absolute moron who rigged up one of them black lights in his canopy, took about a week 1/2 before his corals started dying and everything looked like crap. I learned from his mistake :)

i would be interested to see the effects on corals, i am unsure if it would kill the animals but it would atleast make them look unattractive in the long run. blacklights put out UVA radiation, which can't damage dna or burn skin. but it still destroys collagen and vitamin a in the skin.

so any ladies out there trying to look younger stay out of the raves.

I do not know anything really about UV light, but I do know that about a week after he stuck it above his tank his 3 anemones died and pretty much wiped everything out except a couple corals and a few fish. I guess I can't really say it was the black light but it was quite "fishy" ;D
