If I remember correctly, there are very slight differences. Like natural temp and the way they process saltwater. Either way, they work. I personally have reds.

The common mangroves sold are red because they can tolerate a higher salinity and they drop seeds, I don't think black mangroves can even survive in a marine setup.

That's not true at all. Black mangroves are smaller you usually need to float them on top of the water to ensure that the green part is above the water. They both work well at exporting nutrients, but you do need to wait for them to start growing and spreading their roots.

    some differences:

Black mangroves are excreters, they rely solely on excreting saltwater, and sweat out the salt crystals.
red mangroves are excluders - for the most part they exclude salt from entering the plant. however they must also excrete, but they are in the excluder category.

Both should be misted for best results at removing the salt buildup

they are shaped drastically different at the seed level. black mangroves that start short are easily "bonsaied", with reds it takes more finesse.

black mangroves grow faster than reds.

black mangroves have a shorter germination period, and only drop seeds seasonally, whereas red mangroves drop seeds for a much longer period of time, and the seeds remain viable for far longer than the black mangrove counterparts. (Hence the difference in germination time).

the leaves of black mangroves tend to be smaller than that of reds. Not much difference here though. Both can handle full salinity.
