    Hi...
My tank has been setup for about 7-8 months, I recently lost a fish and I'm looking to replace it.

I'm thinking about going with 2 Black Perculas, but I'm wondering if they'll act just like the 2 Ocellaris Clowns that I started with.

The Ocellaris were the first 2 fish I had in my tank, and they never left the top inch of the tank really. They just floated along the top and behind the equipment.
Then one jumped out, since they slept up at the top, I saved it. It jumped out again, and it died. So I swapped out the other one to a LFS.
I've got plenty of softies and stuff for them to host and check out, and they never left the top.

    I know that happens sometimes...

But is there anything intrinsically different with the Perculas, like that they're not known for staying up top or something?
    Are they more social?

Because I don't really want to buy 2 if I'm going to have to lay on the ground to see them, you know?

Is it more likely that they'll stay at the very top since the other fish have established the tank now?
    Thanks so much.

I could be way off here but did they seem to be gulping air from the top of the tank from time to time? My clown is all over the place and it rests at the bottom.

Agreed. Also, what size tank and how many fish do you have?

I'd say there is no "norm" for clownfish- I had 3 choices of nems, as well as a few soft corals and mushrooms for mine, and they chose the heater as a host. Once they select a host or 'home area', that's where they'll hang out; although it's not uncommon for them to roam a bit as well.

No, they were healthy, not gulping for air or anything.
I mean they swam around a bit, but they essentially made their home at the top. Behind the filter and such.

I've seen a lot of threads asking the same thing, "Why do my clowns stay at the top"

Perhaps they chose the filter to "Host"?

From what I can gather, clowns have a lot of personality and choose to do things at random....free spirits, if you will. I wouldn't worry as long as they are not displaying signs of distress or malnutrition. Just words from an inexperienced person :)

My took to hosting in my gonipora and he never lets them fully extend before he goes in there again, then it closes he leaves and then comes back is the never ending cycle!

Every clown you get, like any fish, will be different. If you get new ones, they could stay at the top, but more likely they will find something to host somewhere else.

I have a pair and they host both of my nems (rbta and lta) plus my euphillia field and ricordias. So basically all clowns aren't created equal.
