My lfs has a black tang for sale. Hes about 6 inches. Their asking 500 for him right now. How does that sound in the price range for black tangs? I dont think i'm gonna buy him, but he does look pretty cool.

I would say that is in the range. You might be able to mail order one for about400 or so plus shipping at the low end, and I have seen them listed for well over 500 as well.

Ya its a pretty cool fish, but I couldnt bring myself to pay that much for a fish. And then if by some chance it died, I think i would have a nervous break down.

I thought a purple tang for £90 was pricey for a tang... IMO I wouldn't take the risk especially if it was mail order, I would want to see it swimming and feeding at my LFS for that price.

Thats a great price on a 5-6" Black tang... Working at a LFS I know what they cost us and thats a gamble for that LFS to sell it so low.... If you have the $$ JUMP ON IT!!!

They are a rare Zebrasoma species that is endemic to the Christmas Islands only which makes this species of Tang so expensive. I, personally, wouldn't spend that much money on a black fish wiht little coloration other than a possible greenish/silver streak on it. Their are so many other species of tangs that are more colorful and beautiful than that, in my opinion.

Yeah, I never saw the appeal of a totally black fish.

Don't know if you've ever seen a black tang live-and-in-person before but when I saw one last month it really cought my eye. Purple tangs are one of my favorites and I thought that this black tang was every bit as pretty. The LFS wanted $600 for the black tang so the purple tang is still a relative bargain.
