    you can bleach the rock i just did that this weekend to eliminate hair algae that came with it. now i know what store not to go to for liverock:angry: anyways please keep in mine that liverock is extremly porous and that bleach will soak right in. to insure you do not endanger your tank soak that bleached rock in a bucket of freshwater and change that water 100% twice daily or more. i got my 2 bleached rocks in a bucket with a powerhead running i have changed the water over 5 times and i still can smell a hint of bleach.....just keep that in mind anyone who uses chemicals to nuke there rock:)

    I am currently doing the rock bleaching due to problem algeas also. from what I understand after soaking in a 50/50 bleach /freshwater solution is that you need just to rinse the rock in fresh water and then soak it for a few days in fresh water after this has been done it then needs to be soaked in saltwater as a reaction with the saltwater and the bleach occurs were the chemicals in the bleach become inert.
    anyone who can elaborate on this? I would be keen to read any links on the processes

    I would not put anything in my systems from another persons tank with out it being bleached or unless I know them and their tanks very well .
    I would also never use L/R or sand .

    My wife posted our method for soaking them and many here have applied our method with never a problem in doing so Its posted here somewhere Amcarrig posted it several yrs ago .

    ok I think I have found a passage of info that should do the trick (it was added later that their should be added another day to each cycle
    Soak the rock in a 50/50 bleach and water solution for about 2 days. Drain the soaking container then soak the rock in clean fresh water for 2 days. Drain the container again, rinse the rock in fresh water and soak again it in fresh water again for another 2 days. Then add a 2lb box of baking soda per 15 gallons of water and soak the rock again for 3-4 days. Drain the container then soak again in fresh water for a day then remove the rock and let it sit and dry for 3-4 days (The baking soda soak is to neturalize the acid and low P.H from the bleach). "
    to summerize
    3days 50/50 bleach water
    3days fresh RO water
    rinse rock and soak in new RO water 3days
    2lbs Baking soda for 15gl fresh water and soke for 4-5 days
    soak in fresh RO 1 day
    let dry
