    I've always wanted a stingray and I finally have a tank that might work. My question is would a blue dot do well in an 8'x2'x2' tank? I would have minimal live rock in the corners of the tank and run a wet/dry and skimmer for additional filtration. Thanks.

    That will work about as well as it can! Make sure;

    the sand is fine grain

    you feed it what it would eat in the while (mussels, etc)

    you don;t have tankmates that will pick on them- this is my biggest concern/reason to not buy one

    good luck!

    What tank mates would work with a blue dot? I really wish I could get an Achilles tang but don't know how well that would work.

    my experience with sting rays from the stores i work in, is that they swim around the edges of the tanks. You might reconsider putting the rock in the corners and instead placing it in the center. An achilles should be fine IMO. However an achilles imo are ich magnets!

    +1 You'll see most dedicated stingray tanks are round. Stingrays can be very active and rub against corners, liverock, and big grained sands causing abrasion on the skin which can lead to secondary infection.

    Yea I've heard that about them too, just such an awesome looking tang. I wouldn't try one unless the tank was going really good and for awhile.

    I've heard that grazing fish like tangs will sometimes pick at the eyes of a stingray. No experience though.

    A lion might be a really cool fish to go with it.

    I used to take care of larger sting rays at a public aquarium, we had no issues keeping fish with them, including tangs. We fed the rays capelin and squid mostly and occasionally herring and sardine.

    A common problem were abrasions on the dorsal surface, so try to limit potential places where they can scratch themselves!
