I would say more often than not they do not eat hair algae. If you are having a pretty serious hair algae problem you should consider getting a sea hare. Those things will mow through the algae in your tank but you will probably want to know someone else around you that is having a similar problem so that you can pass it along after it is done with your tank.

If your H/A problem is that bad I don't think a sea hare would be able to keep up on removing it. I tried it years ago with my 75 gallon that was out of control. He mowed the stuff down all right but it was growing so fast that he didn't have a chance.

Best bet might be to get a phos reactor, remove, scrub and rinse all the rock in fresh salt water and then place it back in the tank and do it weekly until your phosphate and nitrate have reached levels where the H/A no longer grows. It can be a long battle, but worth it in the end.

I've had Blue Legged Hermits in all my tanks, I don't believe I ever saw them eat H/A.

My tangs mow through most of the GHA that appears in my tank. I also have 2 hermits and used to have 2 sea hares. The hermits do occasionally feed on the GHA but now mostly eat my coralline :angry::angry:

Big hermie after falling off the rock and getting stuck upside down:

+1 on the phos reactor-Had the H/A when PO4 was high not anymore.
I have 20+ blue legs in my tank, never seen them eat hair algae.
I have seen my Turbo snails munch it down and Emerald crabs to a lesser degree

I think Missionsix was in need of a pic thinking the if the sea hair isn't eating it, it may not be GHA. In my experience a Sea Hair usually mows through any difficult GHA issues

    Maybe you have Bryopsis
