    Lots of important observations on marine life are done inside aquariums. I would wager more observations are done inside aquariums than outside.

    kudos Stepho... I agree. Alot is done in the specific animal natural habitat and alot is done in artifical set-ups. I know you've been to the Florida Aquarium and spoke with their scientist. I did the full tour for my birthday (swam in the reef and shark tank.. bad ass!) but they still do alot of captive research. They do know that some stuff can't be kept captive and yes some stuff will starve itself months before it dies of starvation. Certain corals have been tried and tried and they even use water pumped in directly from the gulf with simulated machines and pumps... that is why they call it research. Yes, if you don't know how to care for it, it is still inhumane to starve it but that is also why he is here asking how to care for it because he is not into animal abuse like Micheal Vick... lol!
