I know in the past some blue spots have eaten some pistol shrimps, but I really want both. Would it be possible to add a goby and a randalls pistol shrimp first, (and let the shrimp get full size) then add the blue spot? I was thinking maybe the burrow would protect him if the blue spot got hungry.

They're in the same exact niche in the tank, which makes them very, vey likely to fight.

Also, BSJF don't like when there's lots of activity in the tank. That wrasse you have will freak it out.

can't comment on the compatibility, but just make sure you have a tight fitting lid on the tank if you get a BD Jaw, they're gorgeous fish but loooove to jump.

If you have anything that's a fast swimmer, like a wrasse or tang, I wouldn't put in a BSJF. They're a very, very scared of those types of fish, and will freak and jump.

I mean, you can always have success with animals that shouldn't really go together, but it's really a risk. BSJF are the same exact niche as the pistol/goby. The goby and BSJF have the same shape to begin with, so there may be a problem with those two.

I have a yellowhead jawfish and it is the most nervous fish I've ever seen, if it strays a few inches from its burrow it completely flips out and start shooting around the tank like a confused missile. You'd be suprised at how fast it can propel itself, it so easy to see how they end up carpet surfing without tops. That's why if you invest in a Blue Dot (usually they're $100+) be prepared to protect that investment :).

Yeah man, I used to have a BSJF before it went carpet surfing too. I think they should be treated somewhat like the way you would treat seahorses if they were aggressive feeders. No super-fast moving tank mates, or ultra active fish. Stuff like clowns are ok, since they can hold their own at feeding and generally won't be bothered by them, but nothing that's going to constantly appear and disappear near its burrow like a tang.

I wouldnt do it especially with the convict blenny (assuming its the same as an engineer goby). since they are both fish that burrow, the jaw would never acclimate and would most likely jump or stress to the point of death.

Jawfish are VERY difficult to get acclimated but once they become comfortable with their surroundings and have a good burrow, they are some of the coolest fish IMO. The tough part is making sure they are as stress free as possible when first introduced and thats why its recommended to add one before any other livestock in the tank - especially anything that will intimidate it.

Because jawfish are technically not "reef" fish, it's not surprising that they don't do well in reef tanks. I would go with the goby/pistol shrimp combo myself. Far more interesting to watch and less likely to jump.
