a 40g is fine for a 40g as long as when it gets a bit bigger it goes into a bigger tank.i know people who have done this with no problems at all.

I added a yellow tang about 2 weeks ago and he is doing great. Love the fact that he eats all the algea but make sure you supplement with Nori or seaweed. Planning on getting a blue tang and initially thought about a powder blue but read that they have problems with getting acclimated and will most likely die after a couple of months.
Good luck and all the very best to you :)

I picked my blue up at about the size of a quarter. I have not had (knock on wood) any problems with ich since I got him. He is about 7 months old now :) He will be joining the rest of the tank in a 120g soon :D

That very interesting you can start a thread wondering about Tangs and only a few posts later you can begin giving advise.

I had a blue and yellow in a 55 gallon for 2 years without any problems. Finally had to give the blue up because he was getting to big. But during the 2 years I had him, he was great and love to swim back and forth in the front of the tank like a madman when I was near by......He may have been showing off ;)

The size of the tank that they're kept in has a direct affect on whether or not they can do well. So, if they're kept in too small of a tank, regardless of the size of the fish, they can suffer as a result and get sick. This will make them hard to keep. If you're going to upgrade soon, why not just wait until you have a bigger tank to get the fish?
