I got a blue mushroom from my LFS yesterday, it was one that was cut off a bigger rock then sold to me. It has been closed since yesterday, early afternoon. I Had my lights on for 7 hours yesterday, 5 hrs day 2 actinic for dawn/dusk simulation, my LFS advised 10 might be too much now since I only have 2 mushrooms and a frag. How long do they typically stay closed up?

    Thanks All

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If after 3-4 days they are still closed I would.

    1. Check all paramters, SG......
    2. Move to an area of lower lighting.
    3. Move to an area of lower flow if they are currently in mod to high flow.
    4. Make sure your other frag is not too close in proximity.

    Good Luck

Got it, thanks for the quick reply! Do mushrooms require lower placement on rocks? It's about mid level now.

IMO is almost always a safe bet to start lower in the tank with mushrooms. They are more likely to close due to too much light rather than too little. If too little they usually take on a trumpet like appearance in attempt to reach the light.

It looks shriveled up like that now and it's at mid level? Also, is there a preferrable timing period to turn your lights on? Morning, afternoon, night..does it matter or just make sure they get the needed hours. THX

I have limited knowledge on the newer T5 or combination fixtures and no reference for LED. I use MH in a shallow tank, so for me 6-7 hours is more than sufficient.

I have a lot of mushrooms placed at different levels of my tanks and all are doing well. Maybe check your water readings. How long has your tank been running?

My tank has been running for about 8 months, I usually did small water changes every 2 weeks when it was a fish only tank, water parameters are all good. Being that the mushroom was cut from another rock when I bought it, would that create more of a closed period?? Do they typically open up pretty quick after putting them in the tank?

I have cut a lot of mushrooms. Once cut, I like to dip in Iodine to enable healing, only need a few drops, then I toss them into a plastic container with assorted rock pieces and sand, about a week to 10 days later I start pulling out the ones that are attached and wait for the rest of them. By that time, they are looking pretty good and may not be healed totally but I am not taking them out of their water, just moving them around.

It can take up to 2 weeks for a mushroom to completely heal and healing can be slowed due to water conditions, lighting, ect.

I asked about the parimeters because I'm kinda surprised the store would sell it before it was healed.

Is it attached to something and is the rock it's sitting on being moved by the fans, even just slightly? I've heard movement of the rock its resting on can cause a coral to stress too.
