I just bought this rock from my fish store and i'm not sure what is growing on them but they told me that it was good. Just looking for some other input. Thanks.

You got all sorts of stuff on that rock. It looks like some turf algae, maybe some bryopsis maybe some form of calupera but I'm not really sure. IMO, any macro algae in the DT is not good. It will most likely spread all over the tank. If it was my tank, I would bleach the rock and recure it. Of course, you may want to have that algae in there.

Microalgae...your rock looks great! Just get some crabs and they will eat it right up.

It's actually macroalgae. "Mirco" means small/microscopic.

I've been doing some reading on macroalgae and from what i understand it is good to keep nuisance microalgae out of the tank and it seems like a lot of people like having it in their tanks. So i'm still confused if i should leave it or get it out. Would snails and crabs keep it from spreading?

its is VERY good, just not in the DT (direct tank). it will take over. if you have a refugium or even a big enough spot in your filter then put it there. its very good at taking out nitrates.

So if they fit, would it work to put a few pieces in my canister filter?

well i have nothing else i can do with it if i don't want it in my display tank. Even if the algae dies in the canister wouldn't i still have the beneficial bacteria in the rock? Or should i just bleach those pieces of rock?
