i had a boxfish in with my maroon and anemone and all was happy untill he too got sucked into a powerhead and died after a hole was ripped in his side (wont make that mistake again) but there was no problem with the toxins as i was running carbon on the system......i think it would only be a problem when they are much bigger....by which time you will have traded him in or got an 8 foot tank.

I would just avoid getting that fish altogether. They can be a problem in the long run, just like cucumbers. he killed my flame hawk!

Great...I have a ticking time bomb in my tank.... Between my boxfish, and my lovely cuke, that my emerald crab likes to pick at, I can almost hear the tick, tick, tick, tick....

Ricktzer, how did your cuke take out the flame hawk? I've heard that they can nuke a tank and wipe everything out...

After seeing them on sale, I had my eye on a big large pink cucumber, it was feeding. He was real healthy, as I could tell. Well, I decided to purchase him ( knowing that he would be dangerous to my tank), took him home, acclimated him and put him in. Well, a couple of minutes after I put him in, he started spawning, releasing tons and tons of small tan eggs. In the end, my tank looked like a christmas ball. The ones you shake and snow hovers over everthing. Well, turns out the eggs are deadly to fish, no surprise there.. my flame and mandarin were gone by morning time. I still miss the little guy. :-/

If you run a real good skimmer and enough carbon, you should be ok after a nuke, it should take out the toxins. mannyhernz had two tiger tail cuke nukes and his reef is doing good. He's running the stock Pro Clear skimmer, takes out things I wouldn't think were in the water, hehe.

If I were you, I'd take him out before he does something, not that he will, just, protect your tanks inhabitants, anything could stress him out. And about the emerald crab picking on the cuke, I would take the cuke out too, before he does something. Boy, do I regret getting that jerk, I pretty much paid for my mandarin and flame hawks death. ;(

    I'm sorry about your loss.:(
It seems that unless you have a degree, you are swimming in the unknown when purchasing your little treasures. :confused1

I just got "The Natural Reef Aquariums" book, good reading. Now I'm on the hunt for a book that gives DETAILS on fish and inverts. Something I can take with me when the urge hits to add more to the tank. I don't want to make anymore mistakes than I already have.

I've been feeding my emerald crab every couple of days to keep him from nailing the cuke.

"Invertebrates: A Quick Reference Guide (Oceanographic Series)" by Julian Sprung and Daniel Ramirez is pretty good. I know someone who has it and perused through it, it's pretty damn good. I managed to ID a few critters I've been pondering about. It gives a short synopsis on it and it's reef compatibility, etc.

Well, I certainly learned my lesson, I pretty much research and think it through before purchasing an invert or coral.

Awesome! I'll start hunting for it. I've got some stuff that I have no clue about.
    Thank you!
