starting to build up my collection of LPS corals that can handle the flow
in what will be a SPS focused set up

I have a Lobo, some Wellsos, and today added a Indo Scolly and a Cynarina (bright green and Ill get images up tomorrow)

Im running out of room directly on the sand bed ( 3 x Wellos there already) and I want to add a Clam in the future.

are these LPS corals OK on the rockwork ? or are they better placed directly on the sand bed

Lobos will do fine on the rockwork. The rest will be ok as long as the flesh isn't being smashed into the rocks by the flow.

    great news thanks Mike

Ill select positioning with that in mind
I could putty the base onto flat pieces of rock and then putty that to the original rockwork so they are kept clear when inflated

If you do that, they should do great.

I know this is lazy, but could you post a link to your build thread? It's one that I always enjoy and I haven't checked it out in awhile.

Most LPS corals like to sit on top of the sand bed as long is the sand isn't getting blown over them. These corals, especially brains, like to be almost in an under tow type of flow so they can eat the nutrients passing by. Its not a bad idea to keep the brain elevated on a small piece of pvc. Lobos are fine on the rocks. HTH

    great suggestion Mainstream Aqua

my issue was sand in addition to space, as having 2 wrasse and aiming to get more, I am finding 2 of them that get a shower of sand every morning
as the wrasse wriggles out from under the sand next to the rockwork

Yep, I am really stuck between a rock and a hard place with how I feel about sand. :) My 120g was ran without sand for the longest time because I really wanted to make sure that it didn't get scratched at all. I personally think that in most of our systems, sand does more bad than good but I guess that is for another thread.

It is almost as simple as the fact that it keeps nutrients floated in the water column vs donating all of the food to the sand bed. But, we all want a nice clean sand bed so we just strip our nutrients which I am not a fan of. Sorry to go off track a bit.
