Which of the following brands have you had experience with, and what is your opinion?

What have you heard of these readily available brands of cannister filters?

    Marineland.......Fluval.......Eheim...........Rena

One of the aforementioned brands will soon be put to use on a 55 g reef tank. Thanks for your time and input.

When I first got in to the hobby i was sold a Rena XP3 but soon after I realized Canisters are not necessary and actually only cause more problems for you down the line. Just get a good Protein Skimmer with enough LR and thats all you need.

You have to clean them often which is a pain and they really just are not necessary. They are not designed for a reef tank. Do what I did and get your money back for it

    Good Luck

Im running a Fluval on my 55g, seems to work great so far. I clean the foam pre filter every other week. And my nitrates have never been over 5ppm yet. Im very happy with it.

I have used the eheim ecco - did not like this one, not easy to get into and eventually broke. I've used the fluval 3 series. By far my favourite, easy to use and get into, however the pump broke after about 6 months of me slowing the flow down. Shame.
Im currently using a tetratec one, can not remeber the model, but so far its been the best one, 4 compartments, easy enough to get into, and the pump doesnt mind the slow flow. Jobs a goodin!!

I've been using a Fluval 305 for about 8 months now. I'm very happy with it. I like the flexibility to add and take away media as needed. I spend about 30 minutes once a month to rinse out the media. All of my main parameters are in check (undectectable ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, etc.). It could be a little easier to open, but that's a minimal issue. Very easy to prime to get to restart.
