I only need like a gallon (or less) of clean FW per month for my evaporation needs in my 55 gallon tank. I really dont want to spend a whole bunch of money on an RO/DI unit so I was wondering if those Brita filters (the one that attaches to the tap or is in a container that goes in the fridge) would work the same? Thanks!

P.S. I should mention that I get NSW from a filtered spigot provided by the City/County of Honolulu and so I do not need a whole lot of water to mix my own for water changes.

If I lived in hawaii I would be getting my water from the sorce. But don't think britta will cut it. Your water will still have traces of heavy metals in it.

Heavy metals? Jeez, I never even thought of that. I was just worried about phosphate/silica. Do you problems with heavy metals in your tanks?

no cause only use ro/di water. Most common plumbing uses copper pipes and some trace can get back into water, while not bad for human consumption it is deadly for inverts such as coral and crabs.

    This may help

Tap Water Filter from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals

just a single cartridge that attaches to the tap as you need it, produces DI water. I've used them before but my water quality was so bad it burned them out pretty quick, I got maybe 25 gal of water per cartridge.

Distilled water can still contain copper traces, depending on the condition of the distilling plant when they boil the water.

So I could reasonably use a portable water purifier and have the same effects as a full system? What I really want to know is whether or not a brita filter (or an equivalent) will take out phosphate and silica. I really appreciate all the input and that device from Ojinsan looks pretty cool! Thanks!
