This what Brita says their filters remove/reduce.

The Brita® Faucet Filter removes microbiological cryptosporidium and giardia. It also reduces lead, TTHM, VOCs, lindane (pesticide), 2,4-D, alachlor, atrazine (herbicide), chlorine (taste and odor) and sediment.

Brita is simply carbon I believe, or some carbon based mix.

An RO/DI system is the way to go. First it has a dual purpose, water for your tank & the other for you. Those tap water filters get very expensive changing cartridges & still not good for reefs. Second, you can get water that will work in for tank from Walmart. That's where I used to get my water until an RO/DI system. Yes, I said Walmart. It's the gallon container with the green caps on them. Read what the label says "Processed using reverse osmosis" I have used this water in my 29gal for over a year with NO issues! Also, Most of all water stations use reverse osmosis, you know the ones you pay 25 cents a gallon. Just thought i'd share.

Not trying to bust chops, but Wal-Marts bottled/processed water was found to be even worse than a lot of tap systems and was even pulled from some shelves due to it exceeding safety limits. Here's an article:

your probably safe if you buy RO water specifically, excludeing outside contaiminaiton. those containments where either from distillation or improperly maintained ro filters.

actually i just looked up distallation and ive seen it recommend as a alternative on this forum before, let me just say buy the i don't trust the process of evaporation to purify water of chemicals.

to be safe with the ro water i would run it through a di machine or get a tds meter. if its really ro water you should get pretty good life on the di filter(much longer then using tap).

they only place i would completely trust buying water from is a lfs even then i may test it to see whats what.

Actually, as they found during the research of the article, the water is simply tap water from Las Vegas (which is pretty nasty stuff as it is). The water is then contaminated even further by leaching from the cheap plastic bottles that they acquire from uncontrolled overseas manufacturers.

Wow, sounds like I should stick to tap water and just keep using my PhosGuard! I really cant justify buying and installing (I rent) an RO/DI filter. I think I will also think about using the aquarium filtration device mentioned at the beginning of the post.

its really not hard to install just get some fittings from homedepot, and unscrew your shower head and hook it up. if you rent a house its even easier just attach it to the the hose.

Mine sits next to the kitchen sink, and hooks to the sink faucet when I need to use it.

    Nothing to really install.
