    That was exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the star was eating the molt from the crab. I never remove the molt of my cleaner shrimps as that is good nutrients for anything that grabs it.

    are serpent stars also aggressive?

    Yes they are, and once they are successful taking one fish or invert they will try again. The green serpents and banded ones seem to be the biggest offenders.

    I would not call it aggression though, just a constant state of extreme hunger and the tendency to eat anything they can.
