I too have a green brittle. My question is what is the best to feed? It looks like his body is getting smaller...I have had it about 4 months, it was bigger then.

I had a pink brittle star and if anything, my damsel hunted him! Of course he was on "his/her" rock, but this damsel has recently been lost in the great november massacre i had in my tank. My brittle only ate the flake food that went into the tank, no brine or blood worms.

I have a brittle star. I havea feeling that it has eaten a few of my nas. snails and maybe my hermit crabs.... Not sure.

However I have fed my star chunks of raw shrimp from the food store... He will come out to get them and drag them back under teh rock...

Every now and then he also acts wierd and comes out in the open durign the day and just sits in one location. next day he dissapears. I also jsut found 2 ends of his legs broken off under a rock- have not seen him since. Hopefully he is ok...

my first lion fish fell prey to my brittle star i thought the lion whould win but i was wrong and i could not reach the place they were at in my tank it was a dwarf lion and they are kinda lazy hiding under dark leges of live rock so when i replaced it i bought a real lion not a dwarf and as soon as i put it in the tank the star ran to it and tried to lure it in with on of its legs it was scary to wacth thinking i was going to lose another high cost fish but the new lion was not attracted to the cunning prey tacticks of the star and is ok today it actually was pretty cool to see the star in action trying to lure the new lion into his grasp and i figured this is how they act in the wild although i never seen it act this way with my other fish i guess it likes the way a lion smells or looks. GOOD LUCK with trying to deal with your star

I have a Small (6 or 7") brittle star, every time I drop a few crab pellets in the tank for the crabs it comes out from the hole in the rocks it is in most of time.

I never seen a star move like him, it curls up 2 of his legs like springs and vaults forward, he goes about 3 or 4 inches each time. It moves pretty fast for a star covering the width of my tank (20") in about 30 seconds.

Never seen him mess with anything in my tank although I have seen him grab a crab or snail or two and toss them out of his path.

Guess I almost have to chime in with my experience here. I bought a emerald green brittle back when I set my first tank up. It was maybe 5 inches across when I got it. Lost many fish to this monster. Like everyone has said even with regular feeding they'll eat what they can catch. Mine got to about 24 inches across before it lost it's final battle with the mag 18 return pump.
I fed mine silversides and raw shrimp to curb it's appetite. This only slowed the serial killings. :(
They are very cool creatures to watch and do a very good job of keeping the sand bed clean of waste. I would not recomend one in a tank though becasue they're just too unpredicatable.

The green ones are the worst ones. I think people say the red ones and the brown ones are ok.
