    Back at BAYMAC I was pressing my camera as close as possible to a couple production versions of the new Cannon LED Pendants by Ecoxotic when Ike flipped the switch and broadsided me. Did I see stars? I saw the Milky Way. The Edistar multi-chip 50w LED is intense and goes where no other LED has gone before... to the bottom of very deep aquariums. Available later today for $549. More below.

    price=ouch

    but what can you say all newer technologies are usually expensive. I guess in the end almost all led set ups pay for themselves but the initial cost hurts.

    I'm guessing if they could light up a 15 feet deep tank it would probably fry most hobbyist tanks unless they were mounted to the ceiling :)

    15'.... those are really sexy but im affraid they'd bleech out my 75gal. id need one on each side of the tank and then id still need actnic supplement. if i went with 2 -12000K and 2-465nm bulbs im looking at $2k in up front cost with the potential to fry everything. though we're making assumptions without seeing actual PAR values.

    i broke down my proposed MH setup and these Cannon LED pendants would pay for themselves within the first two years. based on monthly electrical savings and MH-bulb replacements.

    im really REALLY happy to see that the technology is starting to emerge more rapidly. this only means better, more efficient, more effective, and better controlled LED systems will be on their way. not to mention that with more competition starting to grow we'll start to see price drops soon enough.

    i figure in the next 3-5 years we'll start to see other light technologies fall to the wayside and the LED market will boom. our children wont know what the heck an incadescent bulb is :)
