Does anybody know how to repair the rims on the top and bottom of a tank or should they be replaced?

I wouldn't risk a repair, I'd just replace for the piece of mind

DEFINITELY replace them. The repair at that particular spot may actually hold, but you don't know what other part may be damaged that you can't see. Don't risk it.

I can vouch for the repair. Dont patch them. they are very integral in the stability of the tank. You can repair it in less than a fwe hours work. remove the old one using a heavy paint scraper. then remove all silicone associated with it using a razor. then add a large beat to top rim of the glass and press the new one on. use your finger to make a nice bead on the inside rim. I have done this on a 225.
