What is the best way to get rid of brown algae growing on sand? I have a 29g with a protein skimmer hanging on back.

Does it almost look like hair? if so its probably cayno bacteria, you will have to increase the water flow and probably buy some ( red slime remover) you can get it through Dr. foster and smith for $19.00

Brown algae is typically just diatoms..

+1 to probably diatoms, they go away on its own or get a goby or snail to clean it up, the long shelled snails that burrow in the ground they mainly work on sand and do an awesome job i have 3 myself

To get a good advisable answer you need to give a little more details. Start by telling how old your system is and what some of your water quality test results are (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc). Also if you have a digital camera it wouldn't hurt to poast a pic. Just trying to help. On the other hand from what you are explaining it could be canyo, but it could also be diatoms. If it is diatoms the will go away on there own in time. If you have a good clean up crew the will eat some of it to. Hope this helps.

If you just started your tank its probably just going through your cycle and it will go away on its own. That's only if its a new setup, if not then its probably what everyone said.
