The bright green algae is fine, and it comes and goes. The problem I'm having is this brownish algae that has bubbles in it at times and even strands out and looks like hair. My tank is only 3-4 months old, and this brown algae started about 3-4 weeks ago. Started very small and was only in 1-2 places. Now its taking over some of the rocks and is getting bigger and bigger. Its stranding out like hair and is ugly.

    So my question is:

What kind of algae is it?
Is this algae bad for my tank?
Will this Algae go away on its own? And how long?
What can I do to get rid of it?

Here are two pictures of low quality. I couldn't seem to get very clear one. Thanks for the help!

I had the same stuff awhile back. It is cyano or dino, not sure which one from the pics. I turned off all lights for three days and haven't had a problem since( knock on wood). I don't believe it will go away on its own unless you take action. Also, can't be anything good about it, gets on corals, powerheads, etc.

it is cyano. how are your nitrates and phosphates testing? What type of lights do you have and what's your light cycle?

so many stains of algae, its hard to say. I would look into reducing your NO3 and PO4 and then siphon as much as you can out and continue to siphon as much as you see. Also, raising your pH with kalk can help too in some cases, as well as increasing turn over rate and flow within the aquarium and skimming heavy, clean mechanical filters often.

Use the 3Reef search engine with these search terms.....either "snot algae" or "dinoflagellates". It's not cyano....cyano is easy to fix. Dinoflagellates are fairly easy too once you know the tricks.
