Diatoms just happen, no way around it. Heck, my 6 year old 20G system is showing a diatom outbreak right now and I have no clue why. MY RO/DI water is 0 TDS, I'm using the same Pro-Reef salts that I have been using for the last 6 years, nothing has changed. Sometimes it just happens. My snails are trying to keep up with it, but they are only doing so much.

my post from earlier in the day was quite casual and laid back.
now that i just got home from work and saw brown algae spreading beyond the sand and onto rock, ect ... i am starting to freak a bit.
So i just let this thing run it's course?
Anything i can do in the mean time?

Reedreef, how old is the tank - if its less than 8 weeks old then its probably diatoms
if its older, then it could be a brown algae

if you can get some images up, then IDs are more accurate and advice given will be tailored to the problem, rather than a supposed problem

if it is diatoms - no attention required, other than dont prolong it by introducing more silicates as in using tap water

it's 10 months old. it's all started in the areas where there's not much current from the jets or water return. but now it's starting to creep onto things other than the sand. i've been stirring it up and scooping some out to try and manage but after 10 hours of the lights being on it's pretty bad. then i scoop and start over.
i'll trying to shoot some shots tonite and post
